Urgent recall for fruit sold in multiple

Posted on June 22, 2025 By Admin

The FDA is warning consumers to stop eating apricots made by Turkana Food Inc. with an expiration date of November 2026, due to undeclared sulfites—a chemical preservative that can cause serious allergic reactions, especially in people with asthma.

A routine test by New York’s agriculture department found that Turkana failed to label sulfite content exceeding the FDA’s limit of 10 parts per million.

Affected product details:

  • LOT number: 440090478-15-333

  • UPC: 2539560010

  • Sold in: New York, California, Texas, Florida

No illnesses have been reported, but consumers are urged to return the apricots for a refund. Turkana Food Inc. has not commented.

Sulfite sensitivity affects about 13 million Americans, and symptoms can range from hives to life-threatening reactions. The FDA banned sulfites in fresh produce in 1986, but still allows them in processed foods—if properly labeled. This comes after a similar recall involving Texas Pete’s Sriracha, which also contained unlabeled sulfites.
