The real purpose of those mysterious lines on towels

Posted on June 24, 2025 By Admin

A simple question recently went viral on social media: why do bath towels have that odd raised line across them?

Thousands joined the discussion, offering funny guesses and genuine curiosity. While it may seem like a minor detail, that line—called a “dobby border”—has a real purpose.

Experts explain that the dobby border is a woven strip at each end of most towels, designed to reinforce the structure, prevent fraying, and maintain the towel’s shape after repeated washing.

It also keeps the towel from becoming too bulky at the edges and helps preserve softness and absorbency.

While it adds a clean, symmetrical look and assists with folding and hanging, the main reason for the border is functional. It even allows manufacturers space for decorative patterns or branding. So next time you grab your towel, remember that line isn’t just for show—it’s quietly helping your towel last longer and look better.
