An 18-year-old mother, Florencia M., was tragically killed by a stray bullet Tuesday night in La Pintana, Chile, during a shootout between rival gangs.
She had stepped outside her home with her 9-month-old baby, hoping fresh air would help him sleep, when she was fatally shot in the chest. Despite being rushed to Padre Hurtado Hospital, she died shortly after.
Florencia, described by her family as a devoted mother with no ties to crime, leaves behind a grieving community and a baby now in the care of his grandmother.
The incident has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for action against escalating gun violence in vulnerable neighborhoods. Mayor Claudio Orrego condemned the tragedy, urging government intervention: “Our neighborhoods can’t be war zones.”
A community vigil was held demanding justice and safer streets. Florencia’s death highlights the ongoing issue of neglect and structural violence affecting marginalized areas in Chile.
