There are some phone calls no family should ever have to receive, and for the loved ones of Emersyn “Emmy” Bridgers, one such call changed everything. Emmy was only 6 years old and had recently celebrated her kindergarten graduation at Euharlee Elementary School. She was excited about starting first grade and had already chosen a rose-themed outfit for the new school year. According to reports, Emmy went to a Georgia hospital for what her family understood would be a routine tonsillectomy. Authorities have said the scheduled surgery ultimately did not take place. Emmy died that afternoon, leaving her family and community searching for answers.

Officials are reviewing medical records, while the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an autopsy. Authorities have not publicly identified the cause of death or said that a tonsillectomy complication was responsible. Her older sister, Jordan Thompson, remembered Emmy as a best friend with a bright smile, contagious laugh and caring personality. At school, Emmy was affectionately known as “Little Momma” because of how naturally she cared for others. The Bartow County School System remembered her as a kind child who welcomed others, offered help and never met a stranger. Her family will carry those memories forward as they await answers. Community members have gathered around the family, offering support and honoring a little girl remembered for her warmth, kindness and joyful spirit.
