The FBI has assigned a 24/7 rotating security detail of up to 20 agents to Deputy Director Dan Bongino, marking the first time such protection has been granted at this level.
Bongino, a former Secret Service agent, opted not to carry a personal weapon and is relying on official security.
Unlike his predecessor, who had limited part-time protection, Bongino’s detail is continuous—even at FBI headquarters.
The move aligns with broader internal reforms under Bongino and Director Kash Patel.
While the FBI hasn’t cited a specific threat, some former officials question the necessity and cost. Bongino emphasized that meaningful changes are underway behind the scenes and urged the public to judge the agency by its results, not optics.
