As Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expands her national profile alongside Senator Bernie Sanders, frustration is growing back in her Bronx and Queens district. Many residents say they feel neglected amid a sharp rise in local crime.
In Queens’ 110th Precinct, robbery, burglary, and auto theft are up 105%. The 115th Precinct has seen an 85% increase.
Longtime Elmhurst resident Guadalupe Alvarez, once a supporter, said, “She doesn’t live in the neighborhood, she doesn’t care…
We’re the ones who got her elected, and now we’re invisible.” City Council candidate Ramses Frias echoed the concern: “People are scared to go outside. We need leadership that understands the urgency on our streets.”
Experts cite officer shortages and stretched public services as key causes. “Police departments are struggling to hire,” said Hannah Meyers of the Manhattan Institute. “Communities like these are being left behind.” While Ocasio-Cortez advocates for national reform, critics argue her constituents need more immediate, local attention.
“If your own district doesn’t feel safe,” Meyers added, “you’ve lost touch with the people who put their trust in you.” As crime rises, many voters are asking whether their congresswoman will turn her focus back home
