US Urges Tourists to Avoid Two Countries Amid Rising Threats

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Colombia and Burkina Faso due to rising violence, terrorism, and political instability. Colombia: Despite its beauty, Colombia is seeing increased crime, including kidnappings, robberies, and attacks by armed groups like the ELN. Tourists are especially at risk in cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena. Travelers are advised to avoid remote areas, stay alert, and keep a low profile. Burkina Faso: Terrorist groups linked to ISIS and Al-Qaeda are active across much of the country, targeting civilians and foreigners in attacks. The government has limited control outside the capital, and U.S. citizens face a high risk of kidnapping and violence. What to Do: Americans in these countries should leave if possible. Those who must stay should limit movement and register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for updates and emergency assistance
