A celebration at PNC Park turned tragic on May 1, 2025, when 20-year-old Kavan Markwood fell 21 feet from the stands during a Pirates-Cubs game. The former college football player from McKeesport, Pennsylvania, lost his balance after pouring beer on himself while celebrating Andrew McCutchen’s go-ahead double. He fell over a 3-foot railing in Section 142, just behind the Clemente Wall. Emergency responders quickly stabilized Markwood and transported him to Allegheny General Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Authorities are treating the incident as accidental. The Pirates noted that the railing involved exceeds code requirements. Markwood, a 2022 graduate of South Allegheny High School, played football at Walsh and Wheeling Universities. Former coaches and community leaders praised his strength, character, and resilience. “Kavan is a fighter,” said district spokeswoman Laura Thomson. “And he’s going to need that strength now.” Pirates chairman Bob Nutting called the incident “devastating,” expressing support for Markwood and gratitude to first responders. The incident follows a string of sports-related injuries that have drawn national attention, including Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs, who suffered a concussion during the NFL playoffs in January. Doubs, who faced additional challenges off the field, also expressed gratitude for the support of his team and community
