Papules and Pustules – Papules are small, red, inflamed bumps without a white center, while pustules look similar but contain pus. These types of acne often respond well to consistent skincare and topical treatments, but if they’re widespread or painful, your provider may recommend a prescription option. Nodules and Cystic Acne – These are deeper, more severe forms of acne that can be painful and may lead to scarring. Nodules are hard lumps under the skin, while cysts are softer and filled with pus. Over-the-counter treatments usually aren’t strong enough for these — it’s best to talk to a dermatologist about prescription options or other therapies
